Alex Johnson, a senior at Illinois College majoring in Business and Sports Management, has been a key player in the college's volleyball program. The Chatham, Illinois native has started her final year with 131 digs and 18 aces over 13 matches. Johnson's journey in volleyball began in kindergarten when she attended college clinics and summer camps with her best friend’s mother. A notable motivation for her early interest was the chance to wear zebra-designed knee pads.
Johnson recalls making music videos as a child with friends using an iPad, often dressed in quirky outfits. "We would make rap videos in my brother's clothing and wear our hats backwards with chains," she shared. Music remains a passion for Johnson, who enjoys singing with friends during car rides and hopes to attend concerts by artists like Pitbull and Post Malone.
Beyond music, Johnson has varied interests including working out, walking her dog, painting, reading, and traveling. She aspires to visit countries such as Italy or Greece.
Despite enjoying many experiences, Johnson's life has had its challenges. Her father’s career as a truck driver meant he missed many of her significant moments growing up. "He supports our family with his line of work... but has missed almost every moment of my years growing up," she said.
Johnson views overcoming adversity as integral to representing Illinois College. "To represent Illinois College is to be resilient in your work and not give up when faced with adversity or a challenge," she explained.
