State Senator Tom Bennett | Illinois General Assembly
State Senator Tom Bennett | Illinois General Assembly
For the past decade, Thomas Bennett has served as the senator for the 53rd District in the Illinois General Assembly. As his term nears its end on January 7, 2025, he reflects on his time in office and introduces his successor, Chris Balkema.
Bennett describes his tenure as filled with "challenges, rewards, and moments I will cherish forever." He acknowledges that every journey must eventually conclude and expresses excitement for Balkema's upcoming role. "Chris was elected in November 2024 to replace me as your State Senator for the 53rd District starting January 8," Bennett states.
Balkema comes to the position with extensive experience from a 30-year career at Caterpillar and over a decade on the Grundy County Board, where he served six years as Chairman. Bennett is confident that Balkema will serve well, saying he "brings with him a strong desire to serve his community."
As Bennett prepares to step down alongside his wife Kathy, he extends holiday wishes: "May your holidays be filled with joy, peace, and the company of those you hold dear."
Looking ahead to January 1, 2025, Illinois residents can expect changes as 293 new laws take effect. These include adjustments in workplace protections and insurance expansions. The final phase of Illinois’ minimum wage increase will raise wages to $15 per hour for workers aged 18 and older.
The state’s financial obligations remain substantial. Currently, Illinois owes over $2.7 billion to state vendors with more than 18,000 pending vouchers. This does not account for debts such as unfunded pension liabilities estimated at over $139 billion.
Bennett signs off by thanking constituents for allowing him to serve them: "Thank you again for the privilege of serving you."
