The Illinois College men's tennis team faced two challenging Midwest Conference matchups on Saturday at the King Field House. The matches were held indoors due to poor weather conditions.
The morning session saw Grinnell emerge as a dominant opponent, defeating Illinois College with a decisive score of 7-0. The Pioneers demonstrated their strength by winning all doubles matches, despite a competitive effort from IC's Jeff Wernsing and Glenn Conway, who pressed Grinnell’s top duo to a 7-5 finish. The Pioneers, with a track record of 190 consecutive Midwest Conference victories, continued their winnings streak by capturing victories in all six singles matches. Conway was noted for his performance, securing five games in his No. 3 singles match.
In the afternoon, Cornell claimed a 5-2 victory over the Blueboys. Although Wernsing and Conway secured singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively, Cornell clinched the doubles point, overriding IC’s efforts despite a win by Drake Bartos and Momir Vickovic at the No. 3 doubles position.
Illinois College will aim to rebound when they host Webster on Sunday at the Bellotti Tennis Center, with matches beginning at 10:00 a.m.
