The Illinois Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit by House Republicans challenging the Democratic party's redistricting maps in the state. The court cited the laches doctrine, which relates to a lack of timeliness, as the basis for its decision. Justice Overstreet issued a dissent, arguing that the court's reliance on the laches defense was without merit.

House Republicans had contended that the maps were unfairly drawn to benefit the Democratic majority, potentially disenfranchising voters. The Princeton Gerrymandering Project, an organization that evaluates the fairness of legislative maps across the United States, assigned the current maps in Illinois a failing grade.

The court's decision permits the continuation of these maps, favoring the Democratic majority in the state.
