City of Petersburg City Council met April 1
Here are the minutes provided by the council:
I. CALL TO ORDER
The City Council was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Mayor Snyder.
II. PRELIMINARY MATTERS
A. Members present were Aldermen Tia Baugher, Neil Conklin, Mike Allison, Rick Sonnemaker, and Andrew Gain. Alderman Bruce Gorman was absent. Also present were Mayor Snyder, Treasurer David Frick, Attorney Jason Brokaw (arrived at 7:12) and City Clerk John Ramage.
B. Mayor Snyder led the Council in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.
C. A motion was made by Alderman Gain and seconded by Alderman Conklin to approve the agenda. VOTES: Sonnemaker, yes; Conklin, yes; Baugher, yes; Gain, yes; Allison, yes. Mayor Snyder declared the MOTION CARRIED.
III. CITY CLERK
A. The City Clerk presented the Warrant List and Accounts Payable. After a review, a motion was made by Alderman Gain and seconded by Alderman Allison to approve payment of the bills as listed on the Warrant List and Accounts Payable. VOTES: Conklin, yes; Baugher, yes; Gain, yes; Allison, yes; Sonnemaker, yes. Mayor Snyder declared the MOTION CARRIED.
B. The minutes for March 18, 2025, were presented. A motion was made by Alderman Gain and seconded by Alderman Baugher to approve the March 18, 2025, Regular City Council Meeting Minutes. VOTES: Conklin, yes; Baugher, yes; Gain, yes; Allison, Allison, yes; Sonnemaker, abstain. Mayor Snyder declared the MOTION CARRIED.
IV. HEARING OF CITIZENS
None
V. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS
A. Police
1. The Police Department Monthly Report was given by Chief Mike Nichols. Chief Nichols noted that March was an average month for the department with 158 calls. Additionally, Chief Nichols gave an update the work hours of an officer, and education status of another officer in the department.
B. Fire
1. The Fire Department Monthly Report was given by Chief Eric Hubner. Chief Hubner reported that unlike February, March was a slower month for the department with 13 calls.
2. Engine #1 is still undergoing repairs.
3. Potholes in the road around the firehouse need to be fixed. A discussion followed regarding how to handle road repairs that are needed.
4. Hose testing and Ladder testing will take place on Saturday April 19th. As a result, 3rd Street from Highway 123 Northward will need to be closed from 8:00am through 3:00pm.
5. The Firehouse was used for the election today.
C. Zoning
No report was scheduled. It was noted that there will need to be action by the City Council, City Council, in regard to the last meeting of the Planning Commission.
VI. OFFICERS' REPORTS
A. Mayor's Report
1. Sale of Water Truck. The mayor received an offer of $1000.00 for the old blue truck that had been put up as surplus, but no one would bid on it. After discussion, the mayor requested a show of hands regarding the sale of the truck. All aldermen were in favor of selling the truck for $1000.00.
Also, status was given on the removal of the large bus behind city hall.
2. Signing of Abatement Bid. Mayor Snyder signed the proposal provided by Triple A Asbestos to remove asbestos from the old middle school at 7th Street and Jackson Street, conditioned upon inclusion of certain provisions from the RFP.
3. Mayor Snyder signed paperwork related to the grant program from the DVR for Jaycee Park.
4. Discussion for a City-Wide Clean-up. Details were discussed and agreed upon. The Recycle Days will be May 8th and 9th (9:00-3:00) and May 10th (8:00-12:00). A truck load will cost citizens $25.00 and must be delivered to a specific location. Details will be published in the Observer.
5. There are three candidates that will be interviewed for the Treasurer position. A candidate will be brought to the City Council at the next regular meeting.
6. The new water well has passed the first of the testing required to put the well in operation.
7. There was brief discussion about the Rise Company, which is attempting to bring additional high speed internet service to the city.
8. Attorney Brokaw gave status of litigation on an asbestos case the city is tracking.
9. Mayor Snyder gave some general "housekeeping" information to the council.
