Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem held a press conference in Springfield, Illinois, addressing the impact of sanctuary policies. She criticized these jurisdictions for not upholding federal law and urged leaders to prioritize American citizens affected by crimes committed by illegal aliens. Secretary Noem specifically called out Illinois Governor Pritzker for protecting lawbreakers.
"As Secretary of Homeland Security, I'm going to uphold our federal immigration laws," said Secretary Kristi Noem. "I'm going to draw attention to people who are breaking the law and violating our Constitution. I'm going to fight for the victims every single day and draw attention to them as long as we can. And President Trump will continue to do that as well. We should be united as a country around bringing violent criminals to justice and getting them out of the United States of America."
The event featured Angel families sharing stories of their loved ones lost due to crimes by illegal aliens. Among those present were Jim Walden, Kathy Zander, Brian McCann, and Nancy Platania, each recounting personal tragedies linked to illegal immigration.
There are more than 200 sanctuary jurisdictions nationwide. The press release highlighted several leaders from New York, Wisconsin, Nashville, Portland, Los Angeles, and Boston who have reportedly refused cooperation with federal law enforcement.
On April 28, 2025, President Donald Trump signed the Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens Executive Order. This directive mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) identify states and localities obstructing federal immigration laws.
Under President Trump's leadership, DHS will collaborate with DOJ to ensure compliance with federal immigration laws across all jurisdictions.
