Money041

Former fire engineer Duane McMikel, who retired in December 2016, saved $124,701 toward a pension over 18 years working for fire departments, Firemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, McMikel would collect as much as $1 million, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Sangamon Sun.

The projection assumes McMikel received $21,058 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 6 years of retirement, McMikel will have already received $136,213 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
