Forty-six dispensaries throughout Illinois can sell recreational marijuana to adults as of Wednesday, including two in Metro Springfield, according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
At least two dozen dispensaries around the state were expected to have recreational pot immediately available for sale to adults on New Year’s Day, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Long lines of marijuana buyers were reported throughout the state on Wednesday. Gov. J.B. Pritzker and others supported legalization of recreational marijuana in Illinois, and the legislature last year passed a bill to legalize such sales and generate additional state revenues.
Under the new law, Illinois residents must be age 21 or older in order to purchase 30 grams of cannabis flower or 500 milligrams of the active ingredient THC in a product containing cannabis.
Cannabis can only be transported in a vehicle if it is in a sealed, odor-proof container and cannot be consumed in any motor vehicle, under the new Illinois law.
