Several military and veterans organizations are combining services to offer active military members and other veterans free wellness checks as the COVID-19 crisis lingers.
Billed as a partnership between private and state groups, Illinois Joining Forces, which includes the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, aims to assist individuals through its Care Coordination Center. The checks for veterans, members of the military or their families can be a one-time occurrence or on an ongoing basis.
“It is imperative that we meet them halfway and in our view it starts with a simple phone call,” said Joining Forces executive director Brig. Gen. Stephen Curda (Ret.), adding that the pandemic has resulted in thousands of people across the state looking for help in managing overwhelming options.
Ordinarily, Illinois Joining Forces works to provide assistance on issues ranging from housing, employment and health care.
