Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) is set to tackle serving as Republican spokesperson for the House Redistricting Committee.
Butler’s appointment comes courtesy of House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).
The committee is tasked with redrawing boundaries for the 177 districts spread across Illinois.
“Since I joined the General Assembly, I have been an outspoken advocate for reform to our redistricting process to end partisan gerrymandering,” Butler said in a March 12 post to his website. “I firmly believe the best way to do that is through the creation of an independent commission. Serving as spokesperson of the House Redistricting Committee provides an opportunity to advance that advocacy and lead discussions around the state for a more fair and non-partisan process.”
Both the House and Senate redistricting committees are slated to hold public hearings across the state before proposing any plan for the state by June 30.
Even though the majority party is often viewed as holding the upper hand in all planning, the decision could be passed on to another committee or even the Supreme Court if the two sides cannot reach an agreement.
Public hearings are slated to start sometime in April.
