I had the privilege of speaking with Leadership Springfield, a program that aims to develop leadership skills and provide in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. This week, I, along with my colleagues from the General Assembly, had the opportunity to engage with the participants of this great program.

One of the key takeaways from our discussions was the increasing popularity and effectiveness of high school trades and apprenticeship programs in Illinois. These programs are offering multiple career pathway opportunities for high school students, giving them the chance to enter the workforce upon graduation or continue their education in college.

Mike Murphy, the President and CEO of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, expressed his gratitude for hosting this program and highlighted the significance of these apprenticeships. He stated, "Youth apprenticeships provide valuable skills and experiences for our young students, allowing them to explore different career paths and make informed decisions about their future."

These programs are designed to provide students with hands-on training and real-world experience in various trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and automotive repair. By collaborating with local businesses and industries, these apprenticeships ensure that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen fields.

Not only do these programs offer practical training, but they also provide students with the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and college credits. This allows them to have a head start in their career journey or pursue higher education without starting from scratch.

One example of the success of these programs is the partnership between Illinois Central College and Caterpillar, a global leader in the manufacturing industry. Through this collaboration, high school students have the chance to gain hands-on experience at Caterpillar's facilities while earning college credits. This enables them to seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue further education in a related field.

According to a report by the Illinois State Board of Education, there has been a significant increase in the number of high school students participating in apprenticeship programs across the state. In the 2022-2023 academic year, over 5,000 students were enrolled in these programs, a 20% increase from the previous year.

These programs have garnered support from both educators and employers. Educators appreciate the opportunity for their students to gain practical skills and explore career options, while employers benefit from a talented pool of young individuals who are ready to contribute to their workforce.

In conclusion, high school trades and apprenticeship programs in Illinois are gaining momentum and providing students with valuable skills for their future careers. Through hands-on training, industry partnerships, and the opportunity to earn certifications and college credits, these programs are equipping students with the necessary tools to succeed in their chosen fields. As Mike Murphy rightly put it, "Youth apprenticeships are an investment in the future of our workforce and our community."
