The Illinois State Capitol recently witnessed a surge in agricultural advocacy activities as various stakeholders gathered during the Session Week to highlight Illinois's prominent role in agricultural production. Among those present were local farm bureau groups, FFA students, and representatives from the livestock and energy industries.

Brian Duncan, President of the Illinois Farm Bureau, emphasized the importance of showcasing the agricultural sector's significance to lawmakers, stating, "This is our day to show our state’s elected officials that we are an important voice on issues that are not only important for agriculture today, but for the future and for future generations."

In a concerted effort to address challenges faced by family farms, House Republicans in Illinois have been actively working towards amending the estate tax system. Norine Hammond, Deputy House Republican Leader, expressed the detrimental impact of the estate tax on farm families, highlighting the need for change to safeguard family farms from being sold off to large corporate entities.

State Representative Charlie Meier, a farmer and Republican Spokesperson on the House Agriculture & Conservation Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating, "The estate tax has devastated family farms for decades as these farms are often sold to pay the inheritance tax."

Furthermore, State Representative Jason R. Bunting emphasized the importance of preserving family farms, stating, "For far too long, Illinois’ estate tax system has threatened family farms – like mine and my neighbors – with the prospect of having to sell the farm if there is a death in the family."

In addition to the focus on estate tax reforms, Illinois's agricultural diversity was highlighted, showcasing the state's production of various specialty crops beyond corn and soybeans. The state's favorable soil and climate have enabled the cultivation of a wide range of crops, contributing significantly to the agricultural economy.

With National Agricultural Week underway, Illinois continues to lead the way in agricultural production, reinforcing its position as a key player in providing energy, food, and fiber to the world.
