The Illinois Air National Guard is a military reserve unit composed of individuals committed to protecting both their state and country. From its beginnings in 1927 to its current role in national defense and humanitarian efforts, the Illinois Air National Guard has consistently upheld its mission. This dedication is evident in the lives of its members, many of whom become community leaders, embodying values such as duty, honor, and sacrifice.
State Representative Wayne Rosenthal of the 108th District exemplifies this leadership. After graduating from Morrisonville High School, Rosenthal joined the Illinois Air National Guard and the United States Air Force. He distinguished himself in Navigator flight training, earning the Husik Memorial Trophy as the top aviator in his class. Rosenthal accumulated over 3,000 flight hours in the F-4 Phantom aircraft.
“The values of discipline, service, and commitment I learned in the Illinois Air National Guard are the foundation of everything I’ve done in life,” says Rosenthal. “Whether in the skies or in the legislature, those principles guide me every day.”
Rosenthal's story highlights how the Illinois Air National Guard shapes its members into leaders. Elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2010, he served until 2015 before being appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. In this role, he led conservation efforts for Illinois' natural resources. He was reelected to the House for the 108th District in 2022.
The history of the Illinois Air National Guard includes numerous instances of bravery and commitment to service. Established as the 108th Observation Squadron on Michigan Avenue in Chicago with sixteen officers and seventy-four enlisted men—mostly World War I veterans—the unit's initial mission was aerial reconnaissance and observation support.
During World War II, it played a critical role near the Panama Canal by conducting anti-submarine patrols essential for maintaining canal security—a key transportation route for Allied forces.
Post-war developments saw expanded roles with aircraft like KC-135R Stratotanker and C-130H Hercules enabling air refueling missions and tactical airlift operations. These advancements showcased adaptability to modern challenges.
In domestic crises like The Great Flood of 1993, members provided vital support by sandbagging levees, assisting evacuations, and offering medical care—efforts that were crucial for many residents.
Following September 11 attacks, deployments included global operations such as combat supply missions during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan alongside humanitarian aid deliveries like earthquake relief supplies to Iran.
“Service isn’t just something you do; it’s who you are,” Rep. Rosenthal remarked. “The Illinois Air National Guard taught me that, and it’s something I strive to live by every day.”
As we honor these forces today not only do we celebrate past achievements but also ongoing contributions from those serving now—reflecting resilience dedication towards upholding state/national strength—a legacy inspiring future generations alike.
