Illinois College's Stella Gonzalez and Haley Sommer have been named the Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Defensive and Offensive Performer of the Week, respectively, according to an announcement by the league today.
Gonzalez, a freshman from Hampton, Illinois, recorded two and a half shutouts in the Lady Blues' three matches last week. She began the week with a shutout against Blackburn in Tuesday's 11-0 victory and followed that with a complete match blanking of Great Lakes Christian College in Thursday's 2-0 win. In Saturday's 7-0 triumph over previously unbeaten Buena Vista, Gonzalez started and spent the first half in net recording a save. She is part of a goalkeeping tandem that has allowed just one goal in the first six matches.
Sommer, a senior from Superior, Colorado, scored four goals (three of which were the first goals of each match) in the three IC victories. She opened the scoring in wins at Blackburn and over Great Lakes Christian College before concluding her week with two goals in the victory over Buena Vista. Sommer leads the Lady Blues with six goals this season.
IC is off to its best start in program history with a 5-0-1 record and will host Millikin at England Stadium on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
