The Illinois College softball team faced Grinnell in a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Grinnell Softball Complex. The two teams each claimed a victory, with Illinois College winning the first game 7-5 and Grinnell taking the second 9-0.
The split results moved Illinois College to an overall record of 18-19 and 11-3 in conference play, while Grinnell's record now stands at 24-14 and 13-3 in the conference.
In the opening game, Illinois College scored seven runs before Grinnell mounted a late rally in the seventh inning. Calynn Gicante initiated scoring with a solo home run, followed by contributions from Elysia Hand, Brooke Loveall, and Kayla Serpa. Julia Drake pitched all seven innings for Illinois College, allowing five runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
"Julia Drake earned the victory and improved to 10-8 on the season," noted the press release. Gicante led her team offensively with three hits and two RBIs.
In Game 2, Grinnell took control early by scoring five runs in the first inning. Hannah Crouch was charged with the loss for Illinois College after allowing seven runs during her time on the mound. Taylor Henry relieved Crouch and pitched three innings.
Illinois College is set to face Cornell tomorrow in Mt. Vernon, Iowa for their regular-season finale.
