Illinois College has announced that Meghan Roman will step down as the head coach of the Lady Blues Softball team while continuing her role as director of athletics. Roman, who started her head coaching career in 2013, leaves behind a record of 211-164, making her the winningest coach in Illinois College softball history. Her tenure included two NCAA Tournament appearances and the team's first NCAA Tournament victory in 2022.
Roman's leadership brought two regular-season Midwest Conference titles and one Midwest Conference Tournament title to the Lady Blues. Many of her student-athletes have received All-Conference and All-Region honors. She was also named MWC Coach of the Year in both 2018 and 2021.
"I have been privileged to work with Meghan Roman for ten years, with a front-row seat to her exemplary coaching skills and advancement as a highly respected athletics administrator," said IC President Barbara A. Farley. "Meghan's demonstrated leadership and management skills...led to her promotion to director of athletics in 2021."
Roman expressed mixed feelings about stepping down from coaching but is eager to focus on her role as director of athletics. "Having the privilege of coaching the Illinois College softball team for the past 13 years has been nothing short of amazing," she stated.
Illinois College provides an environment where student-athletes can develop various skills through its NCAA Division III sports programs, co-ed clay target, esports, cheer, and dance teams. The college will begin a national search for Roman's successor as head coach.
