JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois College (IC) athletic department is highlighting its staff through an Athletic Staff Spotlight series this December. This initiative aims to provide insight into the lives and experiences of the college's athletic staff members. The latest feature focuses on Samantha Laster, head dance coach and director of spirit teams.

Samantha Laster hails from Chicago, IL. She has been involved in dancing for two decades and was a competitive dancer throughout her four years in college. Her coaching journey began in 2010.

When asked about her favorite movie, she named "Love and Basketball," while her favorite food is French fries. Although she resides in Springfield, she mentioned that she does not eat out in Jacksonville.

Reflecting on her time as an athlete, Laster recalls winning nationals as her fondest memory. When it comes to coaching, she believes that "my story is still being written."

Despite working closely with athletes, Laster humorously noted that she doesn't watch sports when asked about her favorite professional sports teams. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Laster's favorite book is "BECOMING" by Michelle Obama because "she's such an inspiration to me." Christmas holds a special place for her as it allows her to visit family.

She expressed admiration for the University of Michigan due to their impressive dance team and inspiring coach when discussing preferred sports venues.

At Illinois College, what stands out most for Laster is Dr. Farley's consistent presence and support—a level of engagement she hadn't experienced at previous institutions where she studied or coached.

Ultimately, Laster's goal at Illinois College is clear: "To make a difference in each one of my student-athlete's lives."
