Evan Henley, a senior captain for the Illinois College Blueboys football team, is recognized for his dedication both on and off the field. Inspired by his mother's love for football, Henley began playing at a young age. Besides football, he enjoys fishing and hopes to go deep-sea fishing in the future. His other interests include cooking, spending time with family, and playing Guitar Hero.
Henley plays a crucial role on the offensive line of Illinois College's football team. Despite not receiving much recognition for his position, he takes pride in protecting his teammates. He was awarded the Taylor Briggs Offensive Lineman award this year and wears jersey #55 in honor of Briggs, an Illinois College alumnus who mentored him during high school.
"A lot of people don't know that I wear jersey #55 for football this year because I was this year's recipient of the Taylor Briggs Offensive Lineman award," Henley stated. "Taylor was an Illinois College alumnus who served in law enforcement after his graduation... This means so much to me because I had the privilege of knowing Taylor when I was in high school, and he mentored me in my faith and football."
Henley's friendship with Briggs has influenced his approach to being a player and teammate. He aims to lead by example and instill a love for the game in younger players. "My goal this year is to be the best leader and captain that I can be," Henley said.
Earlier this year, Henley faced personal challenges with the loss of a family member. "In January of this year, my grandfather passed away... It was hard to carry on in the classroom and on the field," he shared.
Throughout these challenges, Henley has relied on support from friends, family, teachers, and coaches. "Representing Illinois College means a lot to me," he expressed. "This is the only school that gave me a chance to play football in college."
Henley's involvement at Illinois College extends beyond sports; he serves as a Midwest Conference representative for SAAC, President of Pi Pi Rho Literary Society, and TRIO member.
