Illinois College secured a 75-56 victory over Covenant in the opening round of the Smokey Ballenger Classic on Friday at the Rike Center in Westerville, Ohio. This win marks their 12th consecutive victory this season, setting a new school record for Illinois College.
Josh Harris led the team with a game-high of 20 points. Jake Mazrimas and Buzz Ritzel contributed significantly with 16 and 15 points respectively, both also securing nine rebounds each. Matt Thompson added to the scoreboard with 13 points coming off the bench.
The first half was competitive, with Covenant maintaining a lead for most of it until Illinois College managed to equalize by halftime at 31-31. However, the second half saw Illinois College dominate with a decisive 15-2 run that solidified their win.
Following this triumph, Illinois College will compete against Otterbein for the tournament championship. The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
