As part of our ongoing commitment to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Sangamon Sun have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City Of Springfield Finance Department.

The request, dated October 31, 2024, seeks records pertaining to businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, through October 31, 2024. Specifically, we have asked for a list with the following fields: Business name, Business Type, and Amount of Sales Tax Paid.

In addition to this detailed breakdown of business taxes paid during this period, we have also requested information on the total amount of sales tax that the city collected from January 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024.

Our pursuit of these records is rooted in our role as a media organization. Access to public records allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As we disseminate this information to our readership and beyond, we continue in our belief that such access should be granted without fees for media professionals.

We will keep you updated as we receive more information regarding this request.
