A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Sangamon County Clerk's office on January 14, 2025. The request was made by us at the Sangamon Sun, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request sought access to public records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, specifically asking for a list of candidates running in the upcoming 2025 Consolidated Elections. The information requested included candidate names, the dates they filed their candidacy, and the offices they are running for.
As a media organization, we emphasized our role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to these public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
