A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Menard County Sheriff's Office on January 29, 2025. The request, made by us at Sangamon Sun, seeks access to specific records related to immigration detainers issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
In particular, we are requesting documents and/or records showing persons committed to county jails in Menard who have had an Immigration Detainer lodged against them since January 29, 2024. This information is crucial for our ongoing coverage of local governmental affairs and issues related to immigration enforcement.
As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage, we believe that access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We have also requested a fee waiver as part of this FOIA request due to our role as a media organization disseminating information to the public.
The Menard County Sheriff's Office has yet to respond or provide the requested information. We will continue pursuing this matter in order to ensure transparency and accountability within our local government institutions.
