FOIA Request Sent to Lake County Sheriff's Office Regarding Immigration Detainer Records on January 29, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Lake County Sheriff's Office in Illinois on January 29, 2025. The request, issued by Sangamon Sun, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought records pertaining to persons committed to county jails who have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.

As part of our commitment to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, we at Sangamon Sun requested these documents under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. We believe that access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities.

We also requested that these documents be provided in an electronic format for ease of dissemination and analysis. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as per the provisions of the FOIA.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has yet to respond to this request.
