National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was established in 1987 by the Women's Sports Foundation. It began as a day of recognition for women's sports achievements and served as a tribute to Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman. Over time, NGWSD has become an occasion to honor the accomplishments of girls and women in sports and highlight ongoing efforts toward equality in this field. The event is supported by champion athletes and celebrated nationwide throughout the year.
