A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Sangamon County Il Clerk & Elections Division on February 5, 2025. The request was made by us at the Sangamon Sun, a media organization dedicated to delivering comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability in public institutions, we sought records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we requested a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. This information is expected to include the first, middle, and last names of the candidates; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation of each candidate.
In addition to this basic candidate information, we also requested contact details for each candidate. These details include their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization committed to informing the public about local government affairs, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver.
