The Illinois College Esports team faced Michigan State in an MEC SSBU match, concluding with a 9-15 loss. This event marked the team's first SSBU match of the 2025 season, following an 8-4 record in the fall of 2024.

Jake Petrovich, playing Marth, began the match with a strong 3-1 victory over J3T's Meta Knight. However, Michigan State quickly responded as Fair on Banjo & Kazooie narrowly defeated Petrovich 2-1. Noah Horsman then entered with Little Mac but suffered a tough 0-3 defeat. Theo Biela also faced a challenging round, losing 0-3 while playing Incineroar.

Julian Luaders managed to eliminate Fair in a close 2-2 battle using Mewtwo, yet Michigan State countered effectively with Aster on Greninja, who defeated Luaders 1-1. Daniel Scott provided a boost for Illinois College with a commendable 2-1 victory on Jigglypuff against Aster. Despite this effort, Michigan State's Zammo on Little Mac closed out the series with a decisive 2-0 win.

The Illinois College SSBU team will compete again in a doubleheader against Cornell and Campbellsville on Wednesday, February 12th at 8:00 pm.
