State Representative Mike Coffey has introduced a new bill aimed at increasing military recruitment events in high schools. The legislation, known as House Bill 3208, proposes an amendment to the School Code that would require school boards to host recruitment representatives from the armed forces at least once annually.
Rep. Coffey emphasized the importance of this initiative for students' understanding of military service. "I think it’s important we provide high school students with more opportunities to gain understanding of joining the military and the benefits that come from serving the Illinois armed forces," he stated. He highlighted various benefits available to veterans, including property tax exemptions, education and tuition assistance, and privileges related to hunting, fishing licenses, and state park camping.
Coffey further noted that while military service may not be suitable for everyone, having access to comprehensive information can aid students in making informed decisions about their future. "At the very least, students should know of all the options that are available to them after high school," he added.
The bill also brings attention to specific branches within the Illinois armed forces such as the Illinois Air National Guard, Illinois Army National Guard, and Illinois Department of Military Affairs.
