State Representative Mike Coffey has been named Chief Co-Sponsor of House Bill 2813, known as the 72-Hour Budget Review Act. This legislation mandates a minimum 72-hour period before any appropriation or revenue bill can be heard or voted on after being made publicly available. Representative Coffey stated, “This bill is a step towards more transparency and gives legislators ample time to review and analyze legislation. Not only will this help us better understand a bill and know the actually purpose, but it also creates a better structure for the legislative process.”
The initiative aims to enhance transparency within the Illinois General Assembly, addressing concerns about past practices where bills were introduced with little time for thorough review.
In addition to his role in HB2813, Rep. Coffey has co-sponsored another significant piece of legislation, House Bill 5887. This bill focuses on election security by requiring all voters in Illinois to provide proof of citizenship during voter registration. Filed by House Minority Leader Tony McCombie, this measure seeks to uphold election integrity in the state.
Rep. Coffey emphasized the importance of secure elections, stating, “Free, fair, and secure elections is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and Illinois has a responsibility to protect the sanctity of our elections.” He noted that with an increase in undocumented migrants entering Illinois, such legislation is crucial for preventing unlawful voting and election fraud.
