The State of Illinois faces opportunities and challenges in areas such as energy, trade workers, government transparency, and taxation. State Representative Mike Coffey has outlined several legislative initiatives aimed at addressing these issues.

Coffey emphasized the need for relief for working families through lower taxes and improved public safety. He stated, "Families and businesses alike are tired of just 'getting by,' they want to get ahead, but are tied down by burdensome taxes and overregulation."

In terms of energy policy, Coffey highlighted a potential electricity crisis in Illinois due to growing demand projected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. He criticized the current administration's approach to energy policy, particularly its stance on nuclear energy. Coffey supports House Bill 5898, which seeks to extend deadlines for emissions reductions.

Regarding workforce development, Coffey advocates for skilled trade workers with House Bill 1729—the Reinvest in Future Technical Careers Act—which offers tax credits to those contributing to scholarships for technical education. This initiative aims to address the shortage of qualified tradesmen in Illinois.

Coffey also promotes government transparency through HB2813, which requires a 72-hour review period before hearings or votes on appropriation or revenue bills can occur. "This bill is a step towards more transparency," he said.

On fiscal matters, Coffey stands against new tax increases with HR95. He noted Illinois' $3.2 billion deficit for FY26 and stressed the importance of cutting wasteful spending rather than increasing taxes.

Coffey concluded by inviting constituents to share their views via a survey: "It is critically important I hear from you on the issues most relevant to you and your family."
