House Republican lawmakers, including State Representatives Nicole La Ha, Jennifer Sanalitro, and Dennis Tipsword, have presented legislative proposals targeting human trafficking in Illinois. The state ranks among the top ten nationwide for such cases.
Nicole La Ha has been actively advocating against human trafficking through three bills: HB 1114, which removes the statute of limitations for prosecuting certain crimes when the victim was under 18; HB 1467, which eliminates the "mistake of age" defense for individuals accused of patronizing minors in prostitution; and HB 146, amending the Sex Offender Registration Act to include trafficking offenses. La Ha stressed her commitment to ensuring justice for victims and accountability for offenders.
“Today, we took a stand against the horrific reality of human trafficking in Illinois,” said Rep. La Ha. She expressed gratitude to advocates and survivors who shared their stories with her, promising continued legislative efforts to support them.
Jennifer Sanalitro pointed out that Illinois' location and transportation networks contribute to its status as a hub for trafficking. She called for stronger laws, increased funding, and community engagement to combat these crimes. Her proposed bills include HB 1903, allowing legal protection for victims against traffickers, and HB 3237, ensuring victims are not punished for crimes committed under duress.
Dennis Tipsword highlighted collaboration with law enforcement as crucial in fighting human trafficking. He recounted an incident where six men were arrested near his district for related crimes. Tipsword emphasized that law enforcement faces ongoing challenges due to predators exploiting technology like social media.
The House Republican members continue to support efforts aimed at ending human trafficking while advancing their legislative initiatives.
