April is recognized as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the severe effects of child abuse and neglect. This initiative emphasizes the vital role of families and communities in ensuring children's safety and well-being.

Child abuse often remains unnoticed because warning signs are not recognized, or individuals choose not to intervene. Ignoring child abuse only allows it to continue. Statistics reveal that a child reports their abuse to an average of seven adults before formal action is taken, and up to 70% of cases remain unreported.

Those suspecting harm or potential harm to a child should immediately contact 911 or the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-25-ABUSE (1-800-252-2873). Non-urgent cases can be reported using the Online Reporting System.

Recognizing signs of abuse is crucial. Indicators may include unexplained injuries, behavioral changes, reverting to earlier behaviors, fear of going home, eating and sleeping changes, school performance issues, poor hygiene, risk-taking, and inappropriate sexual behaviors.

Education is key in addressing the child abuse crisis. National Child Abuse Prevention Month serves as a reminder that child protection is a communal responsibility. Working together as families, communities, and individuals can create a safer environment for children.

"Remember, you may be the only one who will stand up for a child in need—don’t think it’s none of your business. Do something."
