The Secretary of State’s Office has issued a warning to residents of Illinois about a new text message scam. The fraudulent messages claim to be from the "Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles" and threaten the suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges.

These text messages are identified as phishing attempts, aiming to deceive individuals into disclosing personal or financial information. Officials advise recipients not to respond or click on any links within unsolicited texts and emails.

The Secretary of State’s Office clarifies that it only sends text messages for reminders about scheduled DMV appointments. It does not communicate via text regarding driver’s license or vehicle registration status.

Residents are encouraged to report such scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission through their website at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
