HSHS St. John’s Hospital has introduced a new procedure called Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview, aimed at improving the detection of bladder cancer. This technology uses blue light to highlight cancerous tumors in the bladder, which are often missed by traditional white light methods.

Dr. Ashish Tokhi, HSHS Central Illinois Market Chief Medical Officer, stated that the procedure is "more than a technological upgrade – it is a step forward in how we care for patients with bladder cancer." The method allows for quicker diagnosis and treatment, potentially saving lives through easier and more accurate detection.

Bladder cancer ranks as the 10th leading cause of cancer death in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, men are three times more likely than women to be diagnosed with this type of cancer. This information gains particular relevance during June, which is recognized as Men’s Health Month.

The procedure involves introducing a solution called Cysview into the patient’s bladder an hour before examination. A cystoscope equipped with a camera and light is then used to view the bladder tissue. Under blue light, cancerous tumors glow pink, making them easier to identify compared to using white light alone.

Dr. Mohammad Mahmoud from SIU Medicine commented on the efficacy of this method: “Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview allows me to detect urinary bladder tumors with greater precision.” He likened it to turning on a spotlight in a dark room, enabling him to locate hidden cancers and remove them before they advance further.
