Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Oct. 23.

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL
A meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BOFPC) of the Village of La Grange was held on October 23, 2019 in the lower level conference room of the Village Hall and was called to order at 6:01 p.m.
PRESENT: (and constituting a quorum): Chairman Hoffenberg, Commissioner Boersma and Commissioner Levato.
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: Andrianna Peterson, Village Manager, Terrence Vavra, Fire Chief, Kurt Bluder, Police Chief, and Kevin Noreikis, Intern.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES- SEPTEMBER 27, 2019
The minutes of the September 27, 2019 meeting were presented for approval. After consideration, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato that the minutes be approved. Motion carried.
3. BUSINESS AT HAND
A. Firefighter/Paramedic Oral Interview – Chief Vavra reported to the Commission that the Commissioners will be asked to consider confidential question for the Firefighter/Paramedic Oral Interviews at today’s meeting. Per Chapter IIIB- Section 3 (f)(ii) of the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the oral background interview is intended to enable to the Board to evaluate the applicants – 1). Alertness, 2). Ability to Communicate, 3). Judgement, 4). Emotional Stability, 5). Social Skills, and 6). General Fitness for the position. Chief Vavra reported to the Commission that the proposed questions are representative of the attributes listed in the Rules and Regulations. Chief Vavra gave an overview of each question, explained the importance of each question, and how the questions correlate to the attributes listed in the Rules and Regulations. Chief Vavra then gave an overview of the alternative questions, and stated any of these questions could be swapped with the originally proposed questions. The Commission believed the original questions were strong, and decided not to include any of the alternative questions. The Commission decided that question #1 will be an impromptu question, and question #6 will be a prepared question. Staff will update these questions and will send to the commission via email for review.
4. OLD BUSINESS
A. Update – Police Officer Eligibility Process – Chief Bluder updated the Commission on the Police Officer Eligibility Process. There are two candidates (Ramirez, and Sanchez), from the original eligibility list who are currently going through the eligibility process. At the September 10, 2019 meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the Call for Examination process was initiated with I/O Solutions. Saturday, November 2 at Lyons Township South High School has been reserved for the orientation and proctoring of the exam. Applications for the written exam opened Thursday, September 12, and with an original deadline of Thursday, October 10. Chief Bluder reported that the deadline was extended to Thursday, October 17, in order to attract more candidates. After the application period ended, a 10-day grace period began. There are 34 applicants who have fully submitted an application, and 10 applicants who have an opportunity to fully submit their application within the 10-day grace period.
B. Police Sergeant Promotional Process Update – Chief Bluder updated the Commission on the Police Sergeant Promotional Process. An orientation for the Police Sergeant Promotional Process was held Friday, September 27, 2019. Nine of the eligible 16 candidates will be taking the promotional exam. The written exam was moved to December 2, 2019 in order to accommodate staff availably.
5. NEW BUSINESS
A. Firefighter/Paramedic Oral Interview Date – After discussion, it was decided to keep the regularly scheduled Board of Fire and Police Commission meeting on November 20, 2019. This meeting will consist of Firefighter/Paramedic interviews. Three candidates from the current eligibility list will be interviewed.

Since there was no further business before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato that the meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
