A bill aimed at limiting lawmakers in leadership roles to 10 consecutive years to prevent another decades-long run the state saw under former Rep. Mike Madigan (D-Chicago), who held the speaker role for more than 30 years, has passed the Illinois House of Representatives.
Rep. Mike Murphy (R-Springfield), a "proud" co-sponsor of the bill, was also among the more than a hundred state representatives to give the bill a "yes" vote.
"Leadership term limits will ensure that the 35 years of total control that Speaker Madigan had will not happen again," Murphy said in an April 22 Facebook post. "Hopefully, it will receive the same support in the Senate and signed into law by the Governor."
Under House Bill 642, no one could serve in a leadership role for more than 10 consecutive years as speaker of the House of Representatives, president of Senate, and minority leaders in both chambers.
Illinois Policy reported Madigan's reign cost the state financially both with increased debt and a credit rating that dropped to the lowest in the country with more than $144 in pension debt.
