State Senator Tom Bennett | Illinois General Assembly
Senator Tom Bennett (D-Gibson City) was honored with the 2024 IL Firefighters Public Service Award by the IL Firefighters Association (IFA) for his leadership in passing the new Volunteer Emergency Worker Tax Credit Law. The award was presented on February 3rd at the Gibson City Fire Department, where local and state fire officials gathered to recognize Senator Bennett's contribution.
The legislation, which had been a goal of the volunteer fire service for nearly a decade, was made possible thanks to Senator Bennett's unwavering support. Margaret Vaughn, the Government Affairs Director of the IFA, expressed her appreciation for Senator Bennett's dedication, stating, "Senator Bennett was unwavering in his leadership and support to make this happen."
In his acceptance speech, Senator Bennett expressed his gratitude for the recognition from the volunteer firefighters and the IFA. He emphasized the important role that volunteer first responders play in small towns and rural communities, saying, "They risk their lives, without pay, to help others. This was just a small step in showing volunteer emergency workers our appreciation for their service."
The new law, which will take effect starting with the 2023 tax year, will provide a $500 tax credit to volunteer firefighters who have served for at least 9 months and received no more than $5000 from their department. This tax credit aims to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of these volunteers and provide them with some financial relief.
Senator Bennett encouraged eligible volunteer firefighters to apply for the tax credit and learn more about the requirements by visiting the designated website.
