State Representative Mike Coffey, a Republican from Springfield, has announced his support for House Bill 5887. This bill, introduced by House Minority Leader Tony McCombie, requires all voters in Illinois to provide proof of citizenship during voter registration. Rep. Coffey's endorsement aligns with the efforts of several House Republicans who are advocating for enhanced election security measures.

"Free, fair, and secure elections is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and Illinois has a responsibility to protect the sanctity of our elections," said Rep. Coffey. He emphasized the importance of this legislation in light of "an influx of undocumented migrants pouring into our state," which he believes makes it crucial to safeguard elections from unlawful voting and fraud.

House Bill 5887 aims to address concerns about election system security by introducing transparency and accountability through citizenship verification. The bill is positioned as a straightforward measure that could potentially gain bipartisan support due to its focus on maintaining electoral integrity.

Rep. Coffey further stated, "In order to have free and honest elections, the rule of law must be upheld."

For additional information regarding this initiative, constituents can reach out to Rep. Coffey’s office at 217-782-0053 or via email at coffey@ilhousegop.org.

Representative Mike Coffey represents Illinois’ 95th House District which includes parts of Sangamon County—encompassing portions of Springfield—and extends into parts of Macon and Christian Counties.
