Grinnell College secured a 118-101 win over Illinois College in a Midwest Conference men's basketball game at Darby Gym. The victory on Wednesday marked Grinnell's second win against Illinois this season, following their previous 95-89 triumph in Jacksonville.
Illinois College's record now stands at 19-4 overall and 11-3 in the conference, while Grinnell improved to 17-5 and matched Illinois with an 11-3 league record. Matt Thompson led the scoring for the game with 26 points, while Jake Mazrimas achieved a double-double by contributing 20 points and leading with 21 rebounds. Austin Robinson added to the effort with 15 points and ten rebounds off the bench, and Jahkeis Tippett scored 12 points for Illinois College. The team played without starting post Nestor Daboin.
The match saw eight lead changes during its first half, concluding with Grinnell leading by four points at halftime after a five-point run in the last moments of the period. Although Illinois tied the score early in the second half, Grinnell soon took control, building a ten-point lead midway through. Despite Illinois closing within two points late in the game, Grinnell outpaced them with a decisive final stretch.
Illinois College will return to action on Saturday at Sherman Gymnasium for their last regular-season home game against Lake Forest. The event will begin at 1:00 p.m., featuring recognition for their senior class before tip-off.
