Today marks Election Day in Illinois, and residents who have not voted early or by mail are heading to the polls. To assist voters, here are answers to common questions about the voting process.
Polling places in Illinois will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must be in line before closing time to cast their ballots. In case of delays or issues, courts may extend polling hours.
To locate your polling place, visit the State Board of Election website. Registered voters typically do not need identification unless they registered by mail and are voting for the first time. Such voters must provide two forms of ID, one with their current address.
Voter registration is possible on Election Day at polling places. Requirements include being a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old for a Consolidated General Election, and residing in the precinct for at least 30 days prior to Election Day. Two forms of identification are necessary for registration.
Sample ballots and information on candidates can be accessed through county election authority websites or the Illinois Voters Guide. Voters can bring written materials into the booth and receive instructions on using voting machines from poll workers.
Voters with vision impairments may receive assistance from election judges or a person of their choice, provided that individual is not an employer, union official, or candidate on the ballot. Assistance requires completing an Affidavit of Assisted Voter.
Those who received a mail-in ballot but did not submit it can vote in person if they bring their mailed ballot to the polls; otherwise, they will vote provisionally.
If you believe you registered but your name isn't on the voter list, you can vote provisionally while officials verify your eligibility. Check if your provisional ballot was counted on the State Board of Elections Provisional Ballot Search webpage.
