Republican lawmakers in Illinois have introduced a bill aimed at altering or abolishing sanctuary city policies within the state. The legislation, filed by State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield), seeks to allow counties to opt out of the Illinois TRUST Act through local resolutions. Coffey is joined by fellow Republicans Rep. Paul Jacobs and Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer in opposing the current policies.
Coffey argues that the existing sanctuary city policies have compromised community safety. "The sanctuary city policies in Illinois have made communities less safe over the past few years," he stated. He believes that his proposed House Bill 3241 will enable counties to make decisions that align with their public safety needs and interests.
The Illinois TRUST Act, established in 2017, designates Illinois as a "sanctuary state" for undocumented immigrants and restricts local law enforcement from engaging in immigration enforcement activities. Despite new federal policies allowing for the removal of criminal undocumented immigrants, Coffey claims Governor Pritzker is not cooperating with federal efforts.
Coffey also highlights concerns about resource allocation, emphasizing financial burdens on taxpayers. "I talk to folks from my district often who are working full-time and struggling to pay for healthcare while migrants are receiving free Cadillac healthcare, and it’s not fair to Illinois citizens," he said.
