More than 60 Illinois students from the state's 50th Senate District traveled to Springfield to try their hand at the legislative process. The students were hosted by Illinois state Sen. Steve McClure (R-Jacksonville) as part of his Youth Advisory Council program.
While visiting, the students had the chance to propose and debate their own legislative ideas, which ranged from free college tuition to requiring armed officers in all schools. Students had the chance to discuss the pros and cons of their proposals, and eventually were asked to select one idea to move forward.
The group chose the plan to provide free college tuition.

“This is a way for me to try to get younger people more involved with our government and more involved with the issues that we’re dealing with,” McClure said in a press release.
The group will meet again next year, to hold a committee meeting to further discuss their legislative proposal.
