St. John's Hospital Springfield Illinois issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.

Kohl’s Gotta Dance has openings for its Modern Dance classes. It is an expressive style of dancing. Classes are free and open to first through eighth graders.

Kohl’s Gotta Dance, a partnership between HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Cares®, is a fun and innovative way to help address childhood health and wellness in our community. Classes are held weekly for 26 weeks. Students have the opportunity to perform live and participate in a grand finale performance called Rising Stars.

“Through this program, we’ve seen children and adolescents take a risk to try something new, overcome fears, develops a new skill set, make new friends, improve their self-esteem and learn essential life skills like problem-solving and decision making,” said Kim Luz, divisional director of community outreach at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

The community collaboration includes skilled instructors from Springfield Dance, Studio M Dance Centre and Tracey and Heather’s Dance Synergy. Other partner organizations include Real Life Church, Clear Lake Church of Christ and Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois. Kohl’s Gotta Dance has provided an opportunity to help children of many different abilities and disabilities learn ways to exercise and have fun.

One participant’s mother said, “My daughter’s outlook has changed tremendously. On the dance floor, she becomes more confident.”
