Smokequit

St. John's Hospital Springfield Illinois issued the following announcement on Feb. 12.

Quitting smoking is not about just breaking a bad habit, it is about changing your life so cigarettes are no longer a part of it. “Stop Smoking. Start Living,” offered through the mind-body health services department at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, is a six-week support group program to empower individuals to enjoy a smoke-free life.

Week I: Preparing for a smoke-free life. Participants identify reasons for quitting, barriers to becoming smoke-free, a support network and strategies to avoid triggers and deal with cravings.

Week II: Continuing to prepare for a smoke-free life. Review the steps needed to prepare for a quit date, identify any problem areas, choose a quit date and begin working on a 24-hour action plan to get through the quit date.

Week III: Begin a smoke-free life. Finalize the 24-hour action plan to get through the quit date and make a commitment to quit smoking cigarettes and start living smoke-free.

Week IV: Celebrate successes and overcome obstacles. Report successes, identify challenges/ barriers experienced and create a plan for meeting and overcoming the obstacles.

Week V and VI: Living smoke-free. Participants give and receive support as they continue to identify supports for smoke-free living and create strategies to remove barriers.
