State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) has voiced his opposition to the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) proposed network consolidation plan, stating that it would have negative consequences for Illinois residents. The plan, which involves redirecting Springfield’s mail processing to St. Louis, Missouri, has raised concerns about job losses and mail delivery delays.
"The USPS proposal to redirect Springfield’s packages and unprocessed mail to another state over 100 miles away would be devastating to Central Illinois and families in the community," expressed Rep. Coffey. He also highlighted the potential impact on the economy, warning that the proposal could lead to layoffs for hundreds of current USPS employees.
Rep. Coffey emphasized the importance of finding alternative solutions that would protect workers and ensure reliable mail services for residents and businesses. He stated, “We must do more to protect workers in Illinois because our communities rely on their services and I’m confident an alternative solution can be found that would benefit the USPS operations and residents alike.”
The Sangamon County Board has also expressed disapproval of the USPS plan, labeling it as "short-sighted" and announcing intentions to file a resolution in opposition.
In light of the concerns raised by Rep. Coffey, community leaders, and the Sangamon County Board, the future of the USPS network consolidation plan remains uncertain as stakeholders continue to advocate for the preservation of local jobs and efficient mail delivery services in Illinois.
