State Representative Mike Coffey has called for urgent action to address the rising property taxes in Illinois. He stated that the current public policy is negatively impacting homeowners across the state. "Illinois lawmakers owe it to their constituents to address the crisis of soaring property taxes across the state," Coffey said.
Coffey highlighted a constituent's experience where their monthly property tax and insurance bill increased by $500, labeling this as "unacceptable." He noted that families are burdened with increasing costs while facing high gas prices and grocery bills.
Illinois ranks second in the nation for property tax burdens, with costs continuing to escalate due to what Coffey describes as failed public policies. He criticized the majority party for not engaging in bipartisan discussions on reducing these taxes, despite House Republicans having filed legislation aimed at providing relief.
House Bill 4354 is one such measure, proposing a cap on annual property tax increases to no more than 5% unless substantial improvements are made to a home.
Coffey stressed that without serious efforts from the majority party to lower taxes, Illinois will continue to see an exodus of families. "It's our job as legislators to work for the people of our districts," he added, urging cooperation from his colleagues across the aisle.
He represents Illinois’ 95th House District, covering parts of Sangamon County and portions of Macon and Christian Counties. For further details, Coffey's office can be contacted via phone or email.
