National School Choice Week (NSCW) is being observed from January 26 to February 1, 2025. This week provides an opportunity for families to consider the educational resources available for their children.
School choice allows families to choose K-12 educational settings that best meet their children's needs. These options include traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The aim is to create environments where children can excel both academically and personally.
In its 15th year, NSCW has become the largest celebration of educational opportunity in the United States. It serves as a platform to inform parents about diverse schooling options, helping them make informed decisions regarding their children's education.
During NSCW 2025, over 24,000 schools across the nation are hosting community events to celebrate staff, students, and families while welcoming interested parents. Activities range from school fairs and movie nights to rallies and talent shows. More than 60 large-scale events with statewide impact are planned.
In Illinois, families have access to various educational choices including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, and homeschooling. Several events are scheduled during NSCW 2025:
Chicago Trade Day will be held on February 1 at The Brown House Experience with hands-on trade skill workshops for students ending in a showcase.
All-Star School Events will take place across Illinois. Barbara A. Sizemore Academy in Chicago will host a spirit week with a book fair and dance; Eagle Ridge School in Silvis plans an all-school assembly with team-building activities.
"Every child is unique," states NSCW organizers. "School choice acknowledges this diversity."
The movement aims to ensure every child has access to an education suited to their individual needs. Participating in NSCW 2025 is seen as a step toward securing a brighter future for children.
