State Senators Sue Rezin, Sally Turner, and Terri Bryant are advocating for the strengthening of Illinois' energy future through nuclear power. In a press conference, they outlined challenges faced by the state's power grid and emphasized the need for nuclear developments to enhance energy supply while controlling costs. They highlighted Senate Bill 1527, aimed at repealing the moratorium on new nuclear reactors, as crucial for accessing next-generation nuclear technology. Another focal point, Senate Bill 94, seeks to alleviate power grid strain by requiring foreign-owned data centers to have independent energy sources.
Senator Sally Turner also advanced two noteworthy legislative pieces. Senate Bill 39, catering to affordable housing for veterans, and Senate Bill 2372, focusing on young farmers' access to farmland, both passed the Illinois Senate unanimously. Turner stated, "Ensuring veterans have access to stable housing and young farmers have a pathway to land ownership strengthens our communities."
In efforts to combat human trafficking, Senate Republicans introduced Senate Bill 267, mandating that those who traffic or exploit others for sex work register as sex offenders. Turner stressed the necessity of closing legal gaps to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children.
April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month, with a theme highlighting the significance of preventative measures. Turner emphasized the importance of community resources in child protection. The state will hold various awareness events throughout the month.
Furthermore, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) disclosed recipients of the 2024 Small Equipment Grant Program. Over 300 applications were submitted, and 178 fire services were awarded up to $26,000 each, amounting to more than $4 million statewide. Several fire departments in the 44th District received these grants.
