Memorial Day is a time for Americans to remember those who lost their lives serving in the United States Armed Forces. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms enjoyed today. Initially known as Decoration Day, it began after the Civil War and was declared an official federal holiday in 1971.

Many Americans mark Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades.

In Springfield, Illinois, Camp Butler National Cemetery will host a Memorial Day event on May 26, 2025. The Department of Veterans Affairs is organizing this ceremony with the Inter-Veterans Council of Sangamon County. The event will start at 2 p.m. and include speeches, a moment of silence, a rifle volley, and Taps. Music will be provided by the Springfield Municipal Band, and the Land of Lincoln Chorus will perform the National Anthem.
